MEXCALTITAN is a small man made island in the Mexican state of Nyarit. It is only accessible by water.

imageLegend has has it that it was built and occupied by the Aztecs about 1,000 years ago.

It is a tiny island with just 4 tiny roads – 2 going east/west and 2 going north/south. Then there is a large circular road running around the outer edge of the island.  We walked the entire island around the circular road in under 10 minutes.

The island is neat and tidy and well tended by the very poor islanders. Our boat driver was a local Indian and for as many generations as he could remember, his family had always lived on the island, living off fish and shrimp from the surrounding estuary.

In the summer months the estuary is salt water, and in the winter months it is sweet water. Presumably in the dry summer, the sea can enter the estuary and occupy the water space of the dried up sweet water. And when the winter months of flood start, this dispatches the sea water back out to sea.

I was delighted with the tiny island and it’s friendly occupants.
